Materials needed:

The Pattern (Download above) – Enlarge it to 200% when you print it out for a gift sized stocking or click “fit to page” to print out an A4 version which is small enough to hang on your tree or fireplace. The fit to page version is shown in the step by step photos.

Main Body Fabric –  (12″ x 16″/ 30cm x 41cm)CHECK THESE SIZES – full size or 30 x 42cm for the A4 print out size.

Cotton would work best for this, avoid anything with stretch. Any of our Christmas Cottons would be ideal.

Lining Fabric – 12″ x 16″. Cotton would work best for this, avoid anything with stretch. Any of our plain cottons would be ideal. You could also go with a complimentary print to have a reversible stocking!

A cute bit of ribbon for the loop if you want to hang it. We’ve some cute ribbons in stock.

Step 1:

Fold main fabric in half lengthways, with the right sides together. This will mean the right sides of the fabric is touching and the side facing you which you’re going to draw onto is the back of the fabric. This means that if your pen slips you won’t damage the right side of the fabric.

Step 2:

Draw around the pattern. Air soluble markers are perfect for this, be sure to choose a colour that you will see against your fabric. You can use a biro if you don’t have a special purpose pen but be sure not to use a felt pen as it will bleed across the fabric.

Step 3:

Cut around the pattern, making sure the two layers of fabric are being cut together. Because you’ve folded the fabric over, when you cut around the stocking shape you will be left with 2 stocking pieces. The toes will point opposite ways, this is important for when you come to sew it together.

If you choose to have different fabric for the front and back of your stocking or are using scraps, make sure you have a piece with the toe facing left, and a piece with the toe facing right.
To do this, just place the pattern on the front side of your fabric (with the design) with the foot facing to the left, draw round and cut out. Then flip the pattern over so the foot faces to the right and repeat the process.

Step 4:

Repeat the drawing and cutting process exactly the same for lining fabric.

Step 5:

Take one of your lining pieces and one of your main pieces, making sure for each piece the toe faces the same way.
Place the fabrics right side together, lining up the stocking all the way down, making sure the fabric facing you is the reverse of the fabric.
Now sew a line across the top of the stocking 1cm from the top of the fabric. You may find it easier to place pins or clips along the edge to help you sew without the fabric slipping, just make sure to remove them as you sew!

Step 6:
Repeat with the other 2 pieces remaining.

Step 7:

Open up your stocking and you should have one long rectangle with a foot at each end, with the feet facing the same way so if turned to the side it looks like a smile or a frown.

Step 8:

Press the seam open. To do this lay your long stocking flat and iron across the bit you’ve just sewn. Iron on the wrong side of the fabric with the design facing away from you.

Step 9:

Match the front and back pieces of your long stocking, making sure the lining fabric is lined up with the lining fabric on the other side, and the main fabric is matched up with the same fabric on the other side. The center seams you just sewed should be matched up too. Make sure the right sides are together for this, you’re sewing it together inside out.

Pin or clip around to help to keep the two pieces together.

Step 10:

Sew all around the piece with a 1cm / 3/4 inch seam allowance, leaving a 5cm gap in one of the sides of the lining for turning in the next step. Make sure this gap isnt too close to the top that it will show when you turn over the top of the stocking later.

Step 11:

Cut little notches (triangles)  in the curves of the foot on both the lining foot and the main fabric foot, this helps to alleviate the bulk in the toe when you turn it out.

Step 12:

On the liner side of the stocking, trim the fabric close to the seam to help reduce bulk.

Step 13:

Turn everything right side out through the hole you left in the lining, this might be difficult  and look like a mess when turning but it will work out!

Step 14:

Tuck under the open ends of the turning gap, and top stitch the opening closed.

Step 15:

Push the lining into the stocking and shape the toe.

Step 16:

Fold over the cuff and admire your finished work!

FOR A STOCKING WITH RIBBON

Turn your stocking top back up.

To measure your ribbon – lay it over your stocking with the length of loop you wish sticking out, then cut it to size accordingly.

Place the ends of your ribbon overlapping at the front seam of the stocking and sew a stay stitch line across the existing seam. This is to hold the ends in place while you complete the next step.

Now turn over your stocking top with the ribbon folded inside.

Top stitch around the turned over section enclosing the ribbon inside. This can be fiddly with the teeny stocking size shown in the photos but with the larger size it is a straightforward line of stitching

You can adapt this pattern however you like: making the pattern bigger or smaller to make stockings of different sizes, adding embellishments, making a patchwork version and much more!
